Writing and polishing an abstract is one of the most important parts of finalizing an article manuscript. JMEWS abstracts should be a single paragraph of no more than 150 words. The abstract should summarize the thesis, focus and scope of the work, methods of research and reading, sources examined, main finding and the significance of the argument in relation to existing scholarship.

An author is expected to continually revise the abstract as a manuscript is revised. The strongest abstracts are finalized in tandem with the introduction to the manuscript and its title. Considering them in relation to each other in the final stages of writing often sharpens and clarifies the thesis and conceptual framework of the entire manuscript. One of the most important methods for strengthening an abstract (and a manuscript) is to edit it for active rather than passive voice sentences.
